Questions

Why does the browser ask for the microphone?

Recording needs your permission. The recording stays in your browser until you download it, and it is not sent anywhere.

Why is the file a WAV?

WAV keeps the audio uncompressed, so it plays on almost any device. Convert it to another format with a tool you already use if you need a smaller file.
