Check a file or text with a hash

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data. If a file has the same SHA-256 hash as the one a website publishes, the copy you have is identical to the original.

Questions

Which hash should I use?

SHA-256 is a good default. SHA-512 is longer, and SHA-1 is older and no longer recommended for security checks, though it's still common for matching file downloads.

Can a hash be reversed?

No. A hash can't be turned back into the original data, which is why it's used for checking rather than hiding information.
