How to make a GIF from a video

  1. Drop a video into the box, or click to choose one.
  2. Set the Start and Length to pick the part you want. Ten seconds is the most the tool will take.
  3. Choose the frames per second. Around 10 looks smooth for most clips and keeps the file smaller.
  4. Choose the width. Smaller widths make a much smaller file.
  5. Press Make GIF and download and wait while the frames are encoded.

Tips for a small GIF

  • Keep the clip short. Each second at 10 frames per second is ten images in the file.
  • Start with 320 pixels wide. It's enough for most social posts and loads quickly.
  • Pick a moment with clear movement. Static shots make a GIF that looks like a still image.

Why it takes a moment

The tool steps through the video frame by frame and then builds the GIF in your browser. Long, wide or high-frame-rate clips take longer. The button shows progress while it works.

More questions

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. GIF files don't support audio, so the clip is saved as silent animation.

Is my video uploaded?
